Life Balance: Issues and Experiences:
The global competition has changed the workplace dynamics. In the pursuit of improving performance, increasing productivity, reducing costs and enhancing profitability in the workspace, organizations are evolving new ways and means to build psychological relationships with employees. Work – Life balance is a common challenge throughout the industrialized world. This paper examines the literature on work-life balance, explores its necessity & facets, and presents WLB programmes that are in place in some of the Indian organizations . Reverse Mortgage: A Retirement Planning Tool: Reserve mortgage is a powerful tool that helps eligible home owners obtain a tax free cash flow during their retirement years. A lot of people in countries like the U.S and U.K. have already used reverse mortgages to enhance their retirement benefits. A reverse mortgage is normally a government sponsored and insured loan that requires no payments during the period of time you live in your home. This article explores the possible challenges, opportunities and threats the reverse mortgages loan will be subjected to in the Indian capital market. A Framework for Study of Likely Impact of GATS Implimentation on Indian Universities: Education is a fast growing service in India due to increase in literacy levels and proportion of population in younger age group. It is further likely to increase in foreseeable future as well. Throughout the world education is a government supported service. However, in recent times things are changing, as a consequence of the impact of liberalization of trade, a large number of nations are in favour of expanding education through private sector participation. The role of the government is being reduced due to entry of private institutions of higher learning. This is true in the case of higher education in India also. Under the GATS (General Agreement on Trade in Services) regime the Indian higher education will further be liberalized and made open to foreign players. The purpose of the paper is to present a framework for study to assess the universities’ perception of what impact/changes they anticipate, once government of India commits to GATS in higher education. Offshoring Non-Traditional Service Operations: Over the last decade US firms have offshored and outsoursed many tasks-call centers, help desk-to countries such as India, China and other low cost countries that have an educated and skilled labor pool. These tasks need good telecommunication capabilities and a labor pool that can communicate well in English. The trend in the past few years have been to offshore services in many diverse areas financial analytics, clinical trials, legal brief writing etc. In this paper we describe these and speculate on some other service operations that could profitably be offshored. We will also examine the consequences of such trends for both parties and countries. Profile Study of Mr.Subhasish Chakraborty, CMD, DTDC Courier Co.: Of the hundreds of thousands of business ventures that entrepreneurs launch every year, many never get off the ground, others fizzle out after spectacular rocket starts. But there are a very few enterprises, which start with a humble beginning and turn into one of the nation’s best. One such example is DTDC Courier & Cargo Ltd., in India. Starting in 1990, in a span of less than 20 years, DTDC has become the largest Indian courier company. The great entrepreneur behind the success of DTDC is Mr.Subhasish Chakraborty, the CMD and founder of DTDC Courier & Cargo Ltd., The present article aims to elaborate the life of Mr.Chokraborty, the various unique dimensions of his personality and the strategies adopted by him to win over the odds, which have contributed in his success story. Entertainment on Hold – A Case Study: M& B was the largest manufacturer and marketer of CDs and DVDs, almost all companies manufacturing home videos were its clients for their CDs and DVDs. While supplying to the industry, over a period of time the company realized that there was a huge gap in the demand and supply of home videos in India, leading to exorbitant prices on one hand and a flourishing piracy market on the other. The Managing Director of M & B discussed his assessment of underexploited and fragmented home entertainment market in India with Ramesh Manwani, the CEO of leading home video producer and marketer in the country who had a rich experience of working with leading FMCG companies in India as Vice President and President. After few rounds of discussions, both Thakkar and Manwani were convinced that the industry could be revolutionized by reducing exorbitant prices, checking piracy, expanding distribution and introducing integrated marketing across the country with a single standard system of distribution and pricing. However, M & B realized that its pricing would be feasible only if, it could build a robust distribution network. The case analysis should focus on suggesting appropriate strategics to overcome the challenges faced by the company on the distribution front. |
