| The Making of the Incredible
India Campaign : If there was any one single effort that
contributed to the resurgence of Indian tourism since the end of the
twentieth century, it has been without doubt the Incredible India campaign
of the Tourism Ministry and agencies jointly, after a perilous
fall in tourist arrivals till 2002. Amitabh Kant is credited with
having been the brain behind this path breaking audio-visual-print
campaign that has forced the world to sit up and notice India

| Ecotourism : Does it make
sense?As more entrepreneurs come forward to develop spots all over the
country as ecotourism centres, identifying themselves thoroughly with the
environs, they discover a way out of unemployment and underemployment for
the local population as well as for themselves.
Author : Mr Vinay Luthra is a member of the Indian Forest Service, 1979 batch of the Karnataka cadre. With a Masters in Zoology from Delhi University and another Masters in Development Economics from the University of Wales, UK. Mr Luthra has had a long association with Ecotourism as Executive Director and Managing Director of Jungle Lodges and Resorts, Karnataka. Known for having turned around this sick public sector undertaking JLR, is now an internationally recognized brand which has brought Mr Luthra an award for the Best Ecotourism Organisation from the Prime Minister of India. | ||||||

The role of travel and tour operators in the spread of tourism in the country can never be overstated. With burgeoning tourist arrivals in Indiaand domestic tourism also becoming a habit with the average Indian, the Tour Operator has come to occupy a very important place in the progress of the Tourism industry in India. In order to secure a view from this crucial contributor to the growth of this sector, Tapasya approached Mr. Subhash Goyal. In an emailed interview Shri Goyal made a number of interesting observations and suggestions to take Indian tourism to the next higher level. Author : Mr. Subhash Goyal, Ph.D, M.B.A, B.Com. (Hora Gold Medallist) is the Chairman of STIC Travels Group, one of the biggest airline marketing Company with 44 branches all over India. He is the Immediate Past-President of Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). He has also served as IATO’s President for two earlier terms (1994-2000). Besides, Mr. Goyal is Chairman of ASSOCHAM’s Expert Committee on Tourism and Aviation & Co-Chairman of the Civil Aviation Committee of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry of India. He is also theConvenor - Trade & Services, of Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO). | ||||||

Niche tourism is gradually
coming into its own in India. Among them,
medical tourism is in the forefront, for it not only ensures economy of financial expense, but also provides excellent medical services compared to many countries in the world. Author : Dr. K. Parpyani, MD, is the CEO of Life Smile Biosciences Pvt. Ltd. His career began as an associate professor at one of the medical schools and later in administration department as a registrar. He founded Life Smile, the first company in India to provide medical tourism facilitation services, in the year 2004. The International
Conference on Responsible Tourism held in Kochi in late March 2008 has
kick started the movement which had begun
to drag as a result of slow movement by some stakeholders in actualising the decisions of earlier meets. The Kerala Declaration appears to aim at making a genuine contribution to making RT an article of faith among the participating countries. Dr. Venu was actively involved in organising the Conference hosted by the Government of Kerala and ICRT. The Author : Dr Venu Vasudevan, Secretary, Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala. A doctor by training, Dr. Venu joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1990 and since 1995, has served tourism in different capacities. It was when he was Director of Kerala Tourism that the State transformed its market positioning and built up a strong private-public partnership. Kerala Travel Mart, the biggest international travel mart in the country, is his brainchild, as is ‘A Day with the Masters’, a guided tour of Kalamandalam, that has won international acclaim. Saving the Planet, Saving Indian Tourism : A personal realisation that River Nila, on
the banks of which he had been brought up, was being destroyed by sand
mining, damming and life style changes was the tipping point for Gopi
Parayil, to bring the Responsible Tourism movement to India.
Passionate about sustainable development, Gopinath
believes that Responsible Tourism is a major component to achieve this where tourism can be used as a tool for creating wealth amongst the communities while ensuring that development minimises negative impacts on the environment they live in. Author : Mr. Gopinath Parayil, 34, is the Founder and Chief Executive of an award winning Responsible Travel company – The Blue Yonder based in Bangalore. Gopinath set up Nila Foundation to explore the options to revive and regenerate the dying River Nila (Bharatapuzha) and brought the International Centre for Responsible Tourism to India (ICRT India) to consult and advocate on Responsible Tourism in India. Gopinath has done his MBA from ENPC, Paris and MSc in Disaster Management, Cranfield University,

of India’s tourism industry. It is among the newer sectors that are being seen as ‘sunrise’ additions to a booming industry along with medical or health tourism. Mr. Pandurang Taware was among the first few who saw the immense opportunity in farm based tourism what with the huge disconnect that urban dwellers now face with the countryside. Author : Mr Pandurang Taware, Director, Sales and Marketing, Agri-tourism Development Corporation, Pune, has experience of 17 years in the hospitality business. His core area is sales and marketing of new concepts in this sector. Mr. Taware, who hails from an agrarian family, is well aware of the problems of the farming community.
